MEET THE MENTORS

GROUP 1

Isolde Hoogendonk

Hey everyone! My name is Isolde and I'm a 23-year-old master's student in computing science. I'm a big fan of (board)games, sports, cooking, and meeting new people. I love animals, my favorite food is shakshuka and my favorite show right now is Vikings. I work as a TA for some of your courses, work in the library on campus, do a bunch of committees and all sorts of other stuff, so you’re sure to see me around somewhere! I’d love to show you the ropes of student life and look forward to hanging out with you guys all week! Can’t wait to hear where you’re from and who you guys are!

Wouter van Ouwerkerk

My name is Wouter, I am 20 years old and I am currently in my second year of the bachelor. Even though I am originally not from Nijmegen, I have lived here for almost 2 years now and I have really fallen in love with it. I am very excited to meet all of you and show you the beauty of our association and city during a week which you will never forget.

Max van Doorn

Hi people!

Welcome to Nijmegen! I'll (hopefully) be your host, Max. This week is sure to be filled with lots of cool activities, partying and making new friends! Because that's what I think is the most valuable part of the intro: getting to know all those other Sjaars! Of course we are going to have an awesome introgroup, and from my experience it is also extremely valuable to mix in with other introgroups from time to time. Apart from awesome other Sjaars, there's also lots of other awesome mentors who might be your future TA and colleague-student! So, even if I won't be your mentor, I hope you'll drop by to say hi during the introweek ;).

Now something about myself:

I am an active member of Thalia, being part of the event committee (I strongly recommend joining a committee, its one of the best ways to, say it with me: getting to know new people!).

During my free time I like to play some games, code some games myself or be at the next awesome Thalia event. Sometimes I will do some sporting, such as bouldering or going for a bikeride (although I admit I'm not the most physically fit person).

Anyway, that's a big enough text-wall, I really hope to see you at our awesome introweek!

TL;DR introweek good, make friends, be happy!

Until then,

Max

GROUP 2

Sebastiaan Wortelboer

Hey there!

My name is Sebastiaan and by the time you're reading this I will be entering my sixth (!) year here at the university. In the bachelor's programme, I have chosen the Cyber Security specialization track and I have since followed a number of Cyber Security courses in the master's programme. Besides this, I am also very interested in topics in Artificial Intelligence and love to read about philosophy and psychology. In my free time I enjoy gaming and listening to music, water sports like sailing and windsurfing and going to the occasional party or two (I particularly love drum and bass events). If you see me walking around during the introduction, please feel free to come up to me and ask me about absolutely anything! And if you are in my mentor group, I look forward to meeting you, showing you around and having an all-round great time together!

Hello everyone! My name is Roel. By the time you're reading this, I will be starting my 4th year as a CS student. Apparently I'm supposed to introduce myself to you guys, so I'd like to do this in the form of a game: I'm gonna list 3 things, 2 from which are true statements about me and 1 is false. If you're interested in finding out which one's fake, then you can come up to me in the orientation week and I'll reveal all the answers to you :)

Marijn Meuleman

Dear soon-to-be "sjaars" (first year students),

Welcome to my mentorgroup!

A bit about me:

I am Marijn, a third year CS bachelor student. As you may know, it's quite a challenge to get a room here in Nijmegen, so I still live at my parents' home in Duiven (near Arnhem).

Lectures are so to speak not really my thing, so I will often end up spending days on end in our beautiful Mercator building (with free coffee/tea and, if you're lucky, Cup-a-Soup too), working or more likely "sogging" (engaging is study avoiding behaviour).

When I'm not there I will often be at home gaming or watching videos, or participating in one of Thalia's many events like workshops or borrels.

The intro is a really fun way to get to know your yearmates, the study as a whole and Thalia, and hopefully make some friends. There will be many things you will like!

But some activities might be outside of your comfort zone. My advice: just try those out to!

We will be together as a group everywhere, so it will be fun either way! Moreover, you might find out you like something that you did not expect you'd like before.

I am really looking forward to the introduction and I hope I made you hyped too!

- Marijn

Femke Marijnissen

Hiyaa,

My name is Femke and I'm starting my second year in CS. You'll often find me sleeping through lectures or having coffee jitters in Mercator. But fear not, aside from that I'm usually pretty 'gezellig' :)

I'm really exited to show you all a little bit of uni life, and I hope to see you at the orientation!
